Create a production plan for audio-visual content using special effects
The piece I have chosen to do is a film sequence the genre being Sci-Fi. I chose to do Sci-fi because I would like to challenge myself with the editing aspect and putting the piece together with laser drawn into some frames too.
Running time – My film piece will hopefully be 2-3 minutes long.
Synopsis – It starts with only space in view, blackness with millions of stars lighting the sky. A millennium falcon slowly starts to appear from the right, hiding many stars. You see the millennium falcon rocking back and forth, hovering in place. We see a spark and smoke come of the millennium falcon, it pulls back then zooms off. Not long after, we see a tie fighter zoom past the screen chasing after the millennium falcon. We follow the chase as we continue to see green blasts shot by the tie fighter shooting at the millennium falcon. Theres more smoke from the millennium falcon as it tries to dodge many of the blasts. The millennium falcon speeds up before starting to tip the front of the millennium falcon up doing a flip over the top of the tie fighter positioning itself behind the tie fighter. Red blasts come from the millennium falcon as we see smoke from the tie fighter. We see the tie fighter trails off spinning as it catches alight and explodes.
Target Audience – My target audience will be 13-35. I believe that this piece will appeal to this age range because its not too old or young, the age range may have many Star Wars fans which will also enjoy the film sequence. My target audience will be mainly male but I will attempt to target both female and male because both like Star Wars but stereotypically the male audience will enjoy it more. Because Star Wars is a blockbuster it has a mass audience meaning that many people like it thats why my target audience range is 13 to 35 so it covers a range of people. The class will be middle class because they are able to ‘buy’ my product with their disposable income. The hobbies of my target audience may include gaming and watching movies.
Imaginary entity – Age – 13-35 Gender- Male Status and class – Middle class Job – Computer programmer, full time gamer. Interests – Gaming, going to the cinema Audience Appeal – My target audience will appeal to my film sequence because they like this kind of film. The are already attracted to the genre of Sci-Fi meaning that they already like my piece because it is inspired by Star Wars. My piece will involve action will appeals to a range of people and not only Sci-Fi fans. My film will help the audience escape because my film is based in space which symbolises freedom which I’m hoping the audience will achieve whilst watching this so they only think about the film. The audience will be fans of the genre because of the action and fantasy that allows the audience forget about its normal day to day tasks. The audience are into action. Meaning that I need to add action to my film to the audience enjoy it and they want to continue watching the film sequence. They take enjoyment in mystery, which i am adding in my film sequence with eh mystery of who shot the millennium falcon.
Visual Effects – Within my piece I will be adding visual effect in editing by essentially rotoscoping/CGI in blasts from the ships in my piece. This will enhance the realistic effect of the light beams coming out of the ship. Also I will add in post some explosions and smoke on the ships when they are hit and on the tie fighter when it is shot and later explodes. This will keep the audience engaged and make the film sequence more interesting. I will also be keying in behind my scale model space with stars. This will add to the effect of the ships being in space and the make the audience believe this is a film sequence out of this world. Special Effect – The special effect I will be using is scale models. These are small models of the millennium falcon and tie fighter. I will use these because it makes the film sequence more exciting and interesting. Also it makes it more realistic then using CGI because it could come off as too fake and not real at all. It will make it easier for me film my piece with models because then I know how I want things framed and I can get a clear view of everything.

This location would be perfect for my sequence I would like to film because with the large space I am able to use the green screen in the correct way with my models the right distance from it creating a better image. Also the studio provides me with the equipment I require such as green screen, lighting, cameras, tripods ect, all of these pieces of equipment will be used in the process of making my film sequence therefore I believe that the media studio is the perfect place to film.
Budget plan
M1 - Discuss the issues and risks for the proposed multiple effects
Permission When gaining permission it is feasible as its very easy to email and ask for permission to film at a location like the studio as the teacher in charge is my media teacher therefore its easy to email my teacher as i know that i will be allowed to film in the studio as long as I am safe an sensible.
How will I work in a ‘safe’ environment? What needs to be in place? I will work is a safe place by making sure that the above solutions are put into place. I will make sure that works are out of the way and that the cast and crew know where the wires are so they don’t hurt themselves. Because I am working in the studio I need to make sure there is no risk with the lighting an people getting burnt due to them not understanding how to use the lighting. In such circumstances I will make sure the crew knows how to do the lighting so they don’t get hurt.
Legislation Within my film sequence I gathered some of my crews information like phone number and addresses this means that I must consider the Data protection act this means I can not share any of the data I've collected otherwise I will be breaking this code. I do not have any children within my film sequence so I don't have to worry about the Childrens act. If i were to have children i would have to think about the fact they can not be out of school for more then 7 days otherwise a tutor will be on set. When making my production I must be careful about legal, moral and ethical issues because without these I could get fined for copyright or just personally hurt my crew members. I need to think of employment rights which refers to the law to ensure the crew that is helping me are treated right including statutory rights and contract of employment which is the agreement made between me and my crew members . In my case this would be my friends helping me in my production. I do not need to worry about any laws to do with actors because there are no actors in my production. However I do need to worry about the safety of my crew members helping me out.
Are my risks feasible? My first hazard is the risk of "tripping over wires and hurting themselves" this could be done as there are several wires on my shot including camera and lighting. I am using ground lighting meaning that the lights are set up on a tripod on the floor. This allows the wires to be on the floor connecting to the socket. This could be a tripping hazard as the wires are close to the props which I need close access to being the camera operator. The two lighting stands will be each side of the props eliminating the shadows and giving the effect of the sun. The issue with this is that the wires will be displayed and plugged into the wall. The wires are short so when plugged into the wall from distance can create a tripping hazard. This is a concern as my crew members may trip on these wire if not careful. Therefore I do believe that this hazard is feasible as there are several wires around the shoot. However I will worn my crew members ahead of the shoot that there are wires around and that they should be careful. Also to ensure their safety I will have the lights close to the socket securing that there is barely any wire to trip over and so there is not a big enough space to go round anyway. The camera wire is should not be a problem as the wires doesn't always need to be plugged in therefore there is not much of a hazard here. To ensure their own safety the crew will me skilled within the safety around the equipment as I will run them through the studio before the shoot so they have mentally mapped out the set making sure they are careful.
The next hazard is "the crew falling over props" this is possible as there will a table set up with another table on top to get the right height with the props on top. This could be a hazard as this is a fairly tall easily collapsible table setup that someone could hit and hurt themselves. The props themselves are very small and wouldn't cause a tripping accident. However in saying this the table setup will be large and obvious so I shouldn't think the crew will hit it or miss it. The table setup is also taking into consideration within this risk. The setup is very risky and if someone is not safe around it there could be a hazard. My crew will be on the floor next to the table setup meaning they are in danger as the it could fall on them and hurt them. However I don't think that this risk is feasible as the props being used in the film (the ships) are too small to trip over and the tables will be very large and obvious and hard to miss so I believe my crew members will easily be able to see the tables and will know to be careful around them. Before I start shooting my film sequence I will inform my crew members to be safe around the props and the tables. The skills required to ensure their safety is the skill of knowing there surrounding and mapping out the set and remembering how everything is laid out.
Another hazard is "something falling on my crew members (set/lighting)" this could be possible as the set will be risky as there will be a table set up with a table on top. This is a hazard as these table are easily collapsible and they could fall on someone and hurt them. Again the table setup is dangerous, a hazard of the tables falling on someone is feasible especially because my crew are on the fall and near the tables moving the props will next to the table. Therefore the table could fall and hurt someone. However to ensure the safety of my crew members I have told them to be careful of the tables and to not get too close to them as a small hit may send the tables falling. The lighting (being set up on the floor via tripods) is a hazard as the tripods are wide and take up quite a lot of space. If someone were to hit the tripod leg or trip like the previous hazard the light may well fall maybe hurting someone in the process. Also a risk added to this is that the lighting could burn someone if it fell on them making this hazard even worse. Therefore I will tell my crew members this and show them the concerns and that they need to be care this should ensure their safety. Therefore I think that this is fairly feasible as the lights do have large bases and the setup will be risky however I will ensure that my crew are aware of this and are careful around both pieces of equipment. The skills required for this is the skill of being able to set up equipment properly and professionally with not concerns of the placement and there stability.
My next hazard is "people getting electrocuted" this is possible as there will be a lot of electrical equipment being used by the crew that may be damaged that could electrocute someone. This is a hazard as someone could get badly hurt and it could end was fatality. I have had trouble before with equipment where the wire within the cable is showing which was a huge concern as someone could have gotten hurt when touching it unknowingly. This goes hand in hand with the next risk which is fire as and electricity fault could result in a flame especially if the wire is exposed and near flammable objects like wood of even just carpet like my wires are. To ensure the safety of my crew members I will make sure the equipment we use is safe to use and that there is no bare wires showing where someone could get hurt. Also I will allow no water or liquids on my set ensure that nothing is spilt so no one is electrocuted. I will tell my crew members to use the equipment with caution ensure that they are safe before using it. The possibility of someone getting electrocuted is not feasible so I believe that it is unlikely as the equipment I will be using is safe and secure so that no one will get hurt. The skills required for this are the skills to make sure the equipment is safe and secure, also the skills of what to do if someone were to be electrocuted and what they would do to help them and ensure their safety around the lighting.
My final hazard is "a fire" this is possible as I am using a lot of electrical equipment that when too hot could cause a fire especially the lighting which gives off heat. This is a hazard not only for someone to get hurt but if equipment is misplaced or equipment has exposed wires that could cause a fire, this is a dangerous as someone could get hurt of even die. Again like the electricity this can be caused in maybe ways, the lighting could cause a fire especially if it is in a small confined area with something like a curtain or green screen. If the lighting were to be close the the green screen for a long time this could cause a fire as well as and exposed wire near wood, carpet or green screen could cause a fire. Also just anything electrical being left on could cause a fire as the heat given off near a surface like a curtain could spark a flame. To ensure the safety of my crew members I will make sure the equipment is safe with no wires showing and I will make sure that my crew knows how to operate the lighting and how to be safe around it. Also I will check the equipment before turning anything on so I know its safe. Whenever I leave the room I will ensure that there is someone in there making sure everything is okay and I will turn the lights off and equipment so it doesn't overheat and burn. The feasibility of a fire is very small and unlikely as I will take the precautions required to be save around equipment like lighting and cameras by turning them off when I leave the room.
The Solutions
Resources available to implement the solutions to your hazards: From the hazards I both I must take into consideration the solutions to them for the first hazard which is tripping over wires and hurting themselves, if this were to happen and a member of my crew hurt themselves the resources I have avalible is a first aid kit. This full of medical equipment that will help give the required crew member the attention they need being bandage, plaster ect. Also right next door to the studio is a toilet meaning it a crew member falls over and starts bleeding they can run they cut under a tap or grab some tissues to aid to the cut. Then the first aid kit can be reached if further help is required. Next is crew falling over props, again this could result in a cut which can be treated with a first aid kit and the toilet next door. If any incident is bad a hospital is not far fro the college I'm at meaning that if emergency attention was need and depending on the state of the crew member it would be fast if we were to take them there of call an ambulance. Next is something falling on a crew member (lighting/props) this may happen so the solutions have to be quick. Again the first aid kit could help someone who is hurt aiding a cut or small burn also the toilet next door can help someone if a small burn occurs they can run it under the tap. If there were to be a bad incident where the lighting or props fall on someone's head and they are bleeding the nearby hospital is fairly close and could be called easily to report an emergency. Another hazard is someone getting electrocuted, if the shock is small the crew member is alright they may take a moment to rest and the source of the hazard will be investigated. However in the electric shock is bad and goes as far someone going unconscious we can call the hospital for quick emergency help. And lastly a fire, If a small fire occurs they is a fire extinguisher inside the studio that can put out a fire also the nearby toilets can help put a fire out. In all the surrounding rooms there is a extinguisher that will help put the fire out. Also if the fire is hard to beat the fire department can be called to help extinguish it. If someone is burnt mildly they can be treated with the first aid kit as well as they could be taken to hospital if the burn is bad. The actual costs and feasibility of your solutions: My solutions are very feasible as they are either already at the disposal of the school and the studio or a quick free call away from the hospital or fire department. The solutions I have are easy to achieve as I have personally treated most of these hazards before like cuts, burns, fire, electrocution ect so I have experience when treating my fellow crew members or my self in a time we need it. None of my solutions will cost me as the equipment I need like first aid kits, fire extinguisher, plasters, bandages ect are already at the school and the hospital is free of charge as well as the fire department. How the risks and solutions apply to the production of the piece None of the risk that could occur while filming could be influenced of done because of the kind of things we are film for example I have not got a lighting falling within my film sequence therefore if that were to happen within the production it is not because I was planned. This could apply to my production is I was going on location effects like explosions and someone within my film sequence catches on fire which adapts my story but there was a hazard in this like they got seriously burnt then this be part of my production however like I said the risks that could occur are not part of my film sequence
Working within the scope of the risk assessment and health and safety guidelines
Permissions: I have gained permission from the subject leader and the main teacher for the studio for wether i was able to use the studio to film and effects on locations within an email that I sent him. Skills required: Both myself and my team need skills like, communication, teamwork, punctuality, responsibility. With these skills we are able to work together, be on time, hardworking and sensible. Financial costs: For my production I do not need to spend any money as I already have all the equipment and models I need. Time to gain permission: After emailing my teacher, I received a responds almost immediately. Regulations: This covers the regulations governing the control of substances, hazardous substances and health concerns. I will not be using any harmful chemicals, however i have read the risks and the chemicals the "Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)" covers. This will ensure that i am safe within my production even if I am not coming into contact with dangerous chemicals. How the producer intends to work within the scope: Because I am the producer I will work within the scope of the risk assessment by making sure the crew know the hazards before the shoot and making sure that they are all prepared in case of an accident so the crew know that they are safe and that they all understand the rules and the safety concerns. I feel it is extremely feasible to work within the scope of the risk assessment as I will, before I start shooting is make sure that the cameraman knows exactly what movements they need to make and how that corresponds with the setup within the studio to make sure that they are safe and know where the 'hazards' are like wires. The same for the director making sure that they know the flow of the production and how the studio is set up so they are safe. For the set designer and the people setting up the set I will make sure that they know what they are doing and that they know the hazards within the studio and how to keep safe from them as well as the solutions to the risks if they are met. To do this I will make a final crew call an have a discussion with them again before final shoot about the risks so they know what the risks are, how to avoid them and the solution.
