Planning and referencing
How will I make sure my story is factually correct by cross referencing.
Secondary Sources - TurboFuture is a reliable source especially the article I looked at because the author is studying writing and social media at college. Writing articles like this are what he wants to do for a living so he wouldn't want to tarnish his future by writing a false article before he makes a living out of it. Also his cross referencing within the article itself is taken from reliable sources like HowStuffWork? which is a high quality computer and social networking company that works with social media everyday. Also he read information from the Californian Adolescents health Collaborations, which studied the behavioural differences whilst using social media. This is also a reliable source because this is written by university graduates and scientists that work with behaviour everyday. Child Mind Institute is a reliable source as they are a company that specialise in mental health and learning disorders within children. The company is lead by scientists and workers that work with the mind and effects on it due to social activity. The author of the piece I looked at is a graduate for the university of Chicago and is a senior writer for Child mind. Rachel Ehmke (the writer) has wrote several other articles for Child Mind that have similar themes like "How teens phones are ruining their concentration". There were also hyperlinks included to other articles from fellow doctors and experts within the article. References- https://childmind.org/article/how-using-social-media-affects-teenagers/
Loebig Ink is a reliable source because the site itself is made to help people with social media, marketing and web design. The article itself was written by a Mass Media student who studies at McKinley Technology school. This shows that the author knows what they are talking about because they are on a site that is made for social networking and web design but because they are studying media they know what effects it has as they would have studied social media. AAP News as a source is also reliable as the website is made up of scientists and paediatricians that specialise in the "physical, mental, social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults". There source is reliable because they are professionals in knowing whats wrong with a child and know why. One of the two authors is "Gwenn Schurgin O'Keeffe, MD" she is a paediatrician that specialises in digital media. Her main study focus is cyber bullying and the effects of it. This means this article is reliable because the author is a digital media expert and studies the effects of the cyber world for her job. Kathleen Clarke-Pearson, MD, the second author is a University of North Carolina Hospitals graduate that has been a paediatric for 20 years now and knows what she is talking about with mental health. Evaluating sources and information
Reliability
Why did you choose these people to interview?
Firstly I chose Mr Sheppard to interview as I know that he is a parent of a range of aged children. So the fact I'm interview him gives me some information to use in my story about how a parent sees social media and they think it affect their children. I am also interview Chessie a fellow media student about the affect of social media on her, I chose her because I know she uses social media also she is in my target audience and can give her opinion of the affects of social media. Do you think their contribution was important? Mr Sheppards contribution was very important as it gave an opinion from a high authority I think that the children watching will respect the opinion of a teacher and a parent about what they think of the effects of social media. Also Chessie interview gives the audience the opinion of a peer and how social media effects her showing the audience the benefits of social media and how she uses it. Whereas Mr Sheppard shares both positive and negative effects of social media on his children. However Chessie interview was more important as the audience can relate more to her than then can from Mr Sheppard as he is older, Chessie is the same age as the audience. Where they the right people to interview? I think that they were the right people to interview as Chessie is able to show her opinion as a peer where the audience can relate to her and understand the benefits she has with social media. Also with Mr Sheppard he was the right person as it gives more of a formal approach to the matter showing how important it is to be addressed as well as showing both positive and negative effect of social media on his children.
Relevance of your story to its target audience and broadcaster Because social media is becoming such a popular platform for young people and the age they are introduced is decreasing it is very relevant that this topic be brought up to young people so they can understand the effect of social media and how it could impact their live. Also I have seen previous Newsround episodes that show children using technology and electrical devices so i think this kind of topic is fairly normal to be addressed by Newsround as their audience are familiar to social media and know about it and Newsround have talked about things like this before.
Accuracy of your story I believe that my story is accurate as i have sourced my information from reliable sites that mainly focus on social media and it effects and also from sites where real scientists or investigators have posted, so people with knowledge behind such matters like this. Also I have put the facts against sites more reliable like BBC to make sure the facts a realistic. I have also done some research myself into other websites, blogs, interviews and documentaries that cover effects of social media to see if my data is similar and reliable. Validity My facts are valid and factually sounding as they have accurate percentages and numbers to support the information they are distributing that are easy to understand. Accessibility How will you write your story so that your target audience will understand it and at the same time be challenged by it? I will use simple words when given across my information making sure the audience understand without using too ambitious words or structure. However I think my facts and statistics will be challenging for my target audience as they be shocked by some of the information I have gathered also on how they will interpret the facts aswell. Quality Do you think your sources are good quality? How do you know this? I think that my sources are good quality as I gathered the information from reliable sources that had plenty of different pieces of information that I could've used, also these sites are popular for their information and know what they are talking about. Also my interviews are very good and informative as they help cover how a parent feels and how a young person feels making them good quality as they help build my story with important information and opinions. Cost effectiveness If the story was written for a newspaper would it help sell papers? If so how? I think that a story like this that is affect everyone not just young people it would in someways help to sell a newspaper as people would like to know the effects and how it may impact their life or their childrens. However because I have adapted my article/story to appeal to a young demographic I feel like it may not help sales because the story is for young people and children at this time don't normally read newspaper and when they do read the news its either online or they watch it through shows like Newsround as newspapers are seen as "boring".
